Hi-Tech and Idyllic - Bangalore
Being
from northern part of India, I had not in my dreams, ever thought of coming to
settle down in the tech capital of India. However, marrying a software
professional left me with no choice but to move from the dry and hot Delhi to
the cool and shady Bangalore in later part of 2006. Unassuming and not judging,
I got into setting up home and becoming a part of the city. Today, it is 7
years and I have made Bangalore our home (like so many more outsiders to this
city). I had accepted Bangalore halfheartedly as there was always the
possibility of us moving back up until we moved onto our own house in the quiet
outskirts of east Bangalore. Then the feeling came. The feeling that "I
belonged" to Bangalore sprouted in my heart and I could relate to this
slow paced city. The best part of being a Bangalorean (I can now proudly call
myself one) is the fact that you get to enjoy the nicest weather all the year
round. This goes with getting all types of fruits (ever imagined eating corn cob
or watermelons all the year round). I do
agree that the traffic and the infrastructure is a sour eye of the city,
however, with the almost cool weather and the soft spoken people around could
lead to anyone making adjustments to the traffic and infrastructure being the
off-shoots of rapid development.I love
the “super maaza maadi” attitude. I enjoy using a phrase “What Da…” which I
picked up from my local friends while I was working in one of the top
investment banking companies here. It would be said in such a lovely way that
in spite of you being in no mood to respond, will find yourself answering or
doing the required job that was asked for. I love travelling in the city
buses (especially the Volvo AC buses), in which I sat for the first time in
this city. Sometimes, I do feel handicapped with the language but somehow I manage
with my broken Kannada and fluent English. Best is with my parlour lady, I speak
to her in English and she responds in Kannada. No offence taken by anybody. I
love this happy go lucky attitude of the people in the city. I like Bangalore’s
cosmopolitan culture. I love the fact that local women are educated and proudly
to earn their living even though just by selling flowers. Even though the city
is dotted with pubs and malls, the old world charm of having a fully fledged
city market catering to all the needs, a dedicated market for computer
peripherals and what’s more a whole street dedicated to just street food, is
still intact. I admire the theatre culture of Bangalore, which has given a place
for the newcomers in the field to put up a show and shine. Bangalore has given
me, my own house, my son was born here, I have made few lifelong friends in
this city and finally it allowed me to find my true calling in life. It has
given me the true purpose of what I could do. I feel indebted to Bangalore for
this. It is like life has come a full circle in this city for me. From not
liking it to not being able to live anywhere else apart from Bangalore, it has
become like an addiction.
